Hi All,

I don't think I'm doing this right...

2018/10/04 * 711
Expenses:Beverage:2018:Tea $0.99
Expenses:Food:2018:Snack $0.99
Expenses:Cash:2018 $10.00
Assets:Cash:Checking -$11.98

What I want this to show is a credit to my wallet of the $10 that was
withdrawn from checking.

Would it need to look something like this?

2018/10/04 * 711
Expenses:Beverage:2018:Tea $0.99
Expenses:Food:2018:Snack $0.99
Income:Wallet:Cash $10.00
Assets:Cash:Checking -$11.98

What are some other ideas on showing debit withdraws from POS?

Thanks!

Since most of my expenses are card - based and I can't be bothered to track
them, I do what you do in your original example : they go to expenses:cash
and that's the end of it.

My theory here is anything put in the wallet would be spent sooner or
later and it does not make sense to track wallet balance to closely

What are some other ideas on showing debit withdraws from POS?
What would be wrong with the usual way of "separate" recording?

01/01/2018 Withdraw
Assets:Cash € 100
Assets:Checking

02/01/2018 Some Expense
Expenses:Beverages €5
Assets:Cash

Indeed I second that, it often gets tricky and easily messy wanting to =
put everything in one transaction.

OP said "withdrawas from POS", which seem to suggest that he receives
cashback when making a purchase, so in some sense it actually makes sense
to record it in one transaction.

I feel weirded out, we don't have this in Europe!

In any case, I would still have an `Asset:Cash` account rather
than `Expenses:Cash`.

Cashback is a thing in UK, at least.

If you end up spending all your cash anyway (as opposed to stashing it) you
might as well just skip a step a move it to expense:cash immediately.

To each his own, but putting `cash` under expenses is a very liberal
way of bookkeeping.

`Clothing`, `Utilities`, `Hookers & Booze` are expenses, cash is
an asset.

But I concede that if you use very little cash and mostly for one
kind of thing (going out, etc.) it is an OK approximation.

Another data point. I track cash assets and expenses, so a mixed purchase and cash withdrawal transaction (eg at the supermarket) for me can look like:

2018/09/11 * sprouts
assets:personal:bank:wf:checking -$45.99
expenses:personal:food:groceries $5.99
assets:personal:cash:wallet $40

I think this is what would work best for me.

Thanks all for the very responsive feedback.
